Review: BlackBerry 8700c

RIM_Blackberry_8700cRIM_Blackberry_8700c_usage

"The BlackBerry 8700c is the first smartphone from Research in Motion (RIM) to feature "Intel Inside." Released by Cingular Wireless for use on its nationwide network, the new handset improves upon earlier models by incorporating a larger amount of user-accessible memory, and it is the first BlackBerry to offer the high-speed EDGE data-handling capability.....

Review: LG C2000

LG_C2000

"LG's Unlucky C2000
This Cingular handset packs lots of extras, such as a built-in camera. But poor voice quality and a clumsy design make it one to avoid

Looking for a cool, new cutting-edge mobile phone? This isn't the review series for you. Like many users, I wanted a phone that does a good job acting like a phone. Me, I can no longer afford "cool" -- I accidentally destroyed my last phone, didn't have insurance, and don't feel like shelling out big bucks for a hip, high-end model...

The Good Lots of extras, including a camera, Web access, and MP3 ringtones
The Bad Poor voice quality, short battery life, clumsy button layout, and flimsy-feeling design
The Bottom Line Look elsewhere. Cingular has cheaper, better-quality flip phones. This one doesn't master the basics...

Review: T-Mobile MDA Vario

tmobile_mda_vario

T-Mobile MDA Vario is available now at T-Mobile UK on contract only and T-Mobile is also selling it in a bundle with ALK CoPilot live GPS navigation software, that includes mini-SD card of 256 MB size (includes maps of UK and Ireland). Installatin of CoPilot into MDA Vario is extremely simple: one inserts mini-SD into MDA Vario, automatically installation program starts, and within minutes one can use MDA vario also for GPS navigation!

Generally this review is very positive and calls MDA Vario "the best compromise between a full-on business PDA and a mobile".

Review: Nokia N70

nokia_n70

...It is a very professional-looking device, with a brushed steel faceplate and silver and black casing. The candy bar-style smartphone feels great in my hand, and I like the slide-down camera cover on the back. RF reception with my T-Mobile SIM has been very good. The keypad buttons are small like on the i-mate SP5m WM Smartphone.

I like the use of the standard Nokia BL-5C battery and externally accessible MMCmobile card slot. Photos and video are turning out well, but when taking video the display is a bit choppy. Call volume and quality have been good so far as well...

Treo 700w: A marriage not made in heaven

palm treo 700w

... The Treo 700w ($400 with a two-year Verizon commitment) is a Frankensteinian mishmash. Some of its features are so inspired and well executed, you can't help grinning, while others are so clumsy, you smack your forehead.

In the first category, you'll find a cluttered but fantastically useful new Today screen, your starting point and home base. It offers speed-dial buttons for your most frequently called contacts, displayed either as names or, cleverly, as photos....

Review of Sprint's PPC-6700 QWERTY/EV-DO Equipped PDA Phone

Sprint ppc-6700

A nice review of the Sprint PPC-6700 from mobileburn.com

Sprint's PPC-6700 is based on the HTC Apache reference design. It is a Windows Mobile 5.0 device that packs a lot of technology into a fairly small package: including EV-DO 3G data and WiFi. Its capabilities and form factor are sure to attract business users and regular consumers alike. In fact, the PPC-6700 gave me my first contact with Sprint's newly launched EV-DO network.

Physical Aspects

In spite of its relatively small stature, the PPC-6700 is quite a hefty device. Our test unit weighed 191g (6.7oz), 19g more than what Sprint claims for it and quite a bit heavier than the HTC Wizard based devices for GSM networks that it so closely resembles. In fact, if you ignore the antenna, it measures almost exactly the same as a Wizard based device: 108mm x 60mm x 24mm (4.3" x 2.4" x .9"). The antenna increases the length to 126mm (5"). The one benefit of the stub antenna is that it holds a full sized stylus, something that the Wizards lack...

Qool QDA-700 Review

Qool QDA-700

It runs the Palm OS, it's a PDA, it's a phone, but it's NOT a Treo. The Qool QDA-700 is a compelling PDA feature phone for those who want flexibility in a small and easy to use package.

Introduction

With all of the news about the Palm OS platform lately, I had been one to think the platform was heading towards a niche end with Palm taking its popular Treo model and placing the operating system with Windows Mobile. I am not one who thought that as a platform the Palm OS had any place at all left to go; but to stay on the remaining devices owned by a shrinking user base. And then I was asked if I wanted to do the review for the Qool QDA-700. It is a Palm OS feature phone (not smartphone, I will explain that) and despite some of its rough edges, represents where PalmSource had been talking about taking the platform, and where I can see it being successful.

The Qool QDA-700 is a Palm OS feature phone. Unlike the smartphone Treo, which is primarily a data communicator and phone, the QDA-700 does not espouse to be anything more than a phone that uses the Palm OS to do some neat functions here and there. If you will, the feature side of things is the fact that it has a nice camera (with photo managing capabilities), MP3 player, and games that are a little better than those of many mobile phones.

In my time with the QDA-700, I tried to use it in place of my Treo 600 for all of my day-to-day activities. And within this review, my evaluation of the QDA-700 will be both as how it relates to my usage patterns (which may or may not closely follow yours) as well as some features that many reviews normally cover. I will also directly look at the QDA-700 as it compares to my Treo 600. And then finally, where the Palm OS platform can take lessons from this and the Treo to really be a successful feature phone platform...

LG Develops First 5.0 Megapixel Zoom Camera Phone Module

The pictures you capture with your mobile phone will soon be even better if LG has their way. They have developed a new high resolution camera module to be built into handsets. What makes this one different than all the others? It is the world’s first 5 megapixel module and it supports 3 times optical zoom. That enough imaging power for you? Well there’s more. The module also features inner zoom.

As the names would suggest, inner zoom has a lens which moves inside of the camera module. An outer zoom lens is less portable and therefore less usable. The inner zoom allows users to take higher quality pictures and to take them more quickly. It also allows for better light control because of its iris function. That means cleaner and clearer picture quality...
